Cage The Elephant is a five person band that hails from the southern state Kentucky. They emerged in 2008 with their self-titled debut album, their single “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” topped the charts in both the USA and UK. The group is hard to pinpoint to a specific genre, many would call them funk and punk rock and roll. Known for their very intense live performances, heavy guitar riffs and mixing in soul; they quickly garnered an underground following.

The band toured for two years to promote their debut album, during their tours they wrote over eighty songs thinking they would use them on their sophomore album. Upon returning home to Kentucky, they secluded themselves in rural cabins and scratched all eighty songs. Instead they wrote all new songs for their sophomore album, “Happy Birthday, Thank You”.

The front man, Matt Shultz, said that their debut album was based on fear writing, he wanted something more honest and authentic for the sophomore album. “Happy Birthday, Thank You”, seems to be heavy on the punk sound with heavy metal inspired guitar riffs. Fans need to not worry, there are still songs that favor the soulful funk that made this band popular. You thought this was good? Brace yourself: An Early Ending – Igniter

Destroyer’s album Kaputt has a very unique and interesting sound. It is a mix of soft rock, romantic pop, and jazz that reminds the listener of an earlier time. The songs are deep, witty, and lyric-rich. This provides for a unusual experience that become better the farther into the album the listener gets. Two popular songs on the album include “Bay of Pigs” and “Chinatown.”

The Washington Post called the Kaputt album “Destroyer’s most impressive achievement to date.” And for good reason. The album is a new sound for Destroyer, and has been received by critics all over.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. The first singles “Bay of Pigs” and “Archer on the Beach” sold out within the first month of their releases.

The sounds provoke a chilling calm as well as an inspiring affinity. Lyrics are strong, as well as the jazzy, melodious grooves that will pull the listener in within minutes of listening to the album. The music is timeless, and the lead singer’s voice is something that stands out, revealing his personality to the listener with every song. On the Kaputt album, Dan Bejar’s voice pairs well with the synthesizer sound that is prevalent on the album and reminiscent to the 1980′s.

A very good album, unique and inspiring. It is complex while hanging on to the beautiful simplicity that is music.

Sam Beam is a great crooner for the band Iron and Wine, fitting the ’70′s style groove of the music well. Iron and Wine started out in 2002, then, after releasing thier fourth studio album “The Shepheds Dog” in 2007, suddenly stopped making albums until now. “Kiss each other Clean” was released in January 2011 (courtesy of Warner Bros), making a great comeback with a mixture of old and new funk.

The amazing imagery starts with the very brilliant album cover, and continues through most of the songs. Favorite songs of “Kiss each other Clean” like “Me and Lazarus” and “Tree by the River” create a dream-like atmosphere with the poetic riffs and lyrics. Other great qualities about this album are the multi-part vocal arrangements, electronic synth sounds (like DJ scratching), and the horn sections like in “Big Burned Hand”. The producer, Brian Deck, and Sam Beam have a great relationship that creates a comfortable feeling throughout the album, Beam’s musical experimentation (trying new sounds for example)gives Deck a challenge that he was meant to conquer.

If you like listenig to music like Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Wonder, listen to Iron and Wine’s “Kiss each other Clean”, and you will be delighted with what you hear.

We love the “Black Rabbits” because they are one of Indie’s newest rock bands not selling out to auto-tuning technology. Their music is punchy featuring an energetic rhythm launching a listener into days of past with simplicity reminiscent of “The Turtles” combined with deep musical voices and harmonies comparable to “The Pixies.”

Although they lack global recognition (for now), this upcoming young band is obviously influenced by trendy bands of early “pop rock” like “The Monkees,” “The Animals,” and even “The Beatles.” Despite early influences heard in their music, they found uniqueness highlighting the smooth voice of lead singer, Jetson Black, whose vocals mesh seamlessly with those of Reah Smith and Kim Drake. Hard-hitting brother, Skyler Black, keeps the rigid beat on drums.

The “Black Rabbits” possess talent not seen in many current bands that rely heavily on mixing and tuning. Their music has just enough raw nature to make it sound as though you were sitting in the garage while they rehearsed and recorded the tracks to their self-titled EP. This album is a cunning mixture of melodic riffs and consistently power-packed pulses which makes for an interesting, and memorable, listen. This is why we love the “Black Rabbits.”

The idea had taken greater than 12 months of carefully protected discussions, however Dark Night of the Soul, a mystical recording by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse plus David Lynch, ultimately received the official launch during the springtime in ’09, in spite of an unspecified argument among EMI Records and also developer Brian Burton (a. k. a. Danger Mouse). The recording was introduced July 13, 2010.

Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous (a. k. a. Sparklehorse) initially developed the concept meant for Dark Night of the Soul when performing collectively in the 2006 Sparklehorse recording Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain. Linkous wrote several tunes he had not been at ease performing, therefore Danger Mouse recommended acquiring another person to perform the words. The outcome is definitely a star studded ensemble with invitee performers, such as the Shins’ James Mercer (who not too long ago performed with Danger Mouse for the Broken Bells album), Julian Casablancas from the Strokes as well as Iggy Pop, all of which feature their own presentation within the Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse tunes.

“As we all completed the tunes aided by the numerous performers, many of us began to observe a few intriguing habits, ” Burton states. “We’d in no way offered any particular path to many of the performers included. However, in that respect there was a widespread subject matter within the lyrics and experience from the tunes. There is agony, vengeance, conflict, sprained aspirations along with other magnificently haunting aesthetic elements with it virtually.”

Components to these haunting artistic elements ended up seized in the group of surreal photos filmmaker David Lynch developed, in line with the tales and subjects in the tracks. The actual photos can be found in a 48-page guide inside the elite variation for Dark Night of the Soul, that additionally features a poster, postcards, 2 LPs, the COMPACT DISC along with a special instrumental COMPACT DISC. Lynch on his own, in fact, sings for a handful of songs within the recording.

Dark Night of the Soul is as odd and ominous as you may might anticipate via David Lynch or Mark Linkous, whom tragically comitted suicide preceding this current year. (One of the invitee vocalists for the recording, Vic Chesnutt, additionally killed himself in Dec. ) However, Dark Night offers it’s enjoyable instances, as well. It is the ideal union with pleasure plus sadness, and another of the most extremely remarkable selections of tunes within the previous season.

With the release of their sophomore effort Say It, Born Ruffians remain firmly entrenched in their ability to blend catchy pop hooks with often humorously jaded lyrics but also veer their hipster ship into some formerly uncharted waters. Vocalist Luke Lolande sounds less restrained, though the album itself is far more sparse than earlier work, and while some make the claim he has become a worse vocalist others may hear a voice that is far more willing to take risks with range and delivery. With guitar fuzz comfortingly similar to that heard on their previous release, Red, Yellow & Blue, the band still manages to bring forth fresh strings and often it is the moment between the notes that carries the strongest emphasis to the listener.

This disc will undoubtedly be hailed as the ‘maturing’ album for the band by proving that they can quickly put out a follow up as strong as their debut effort but with some contrived songwriting and paint by numbers musicianship evident on nearly half of this release, the band has proven there is still much growing up to do. While this effort has some promising songs such as the epic ‘The Ballad of Moose Bruce’, this Canadian trio needs to display a bit more musical faith in the listeners and themselves if they wish to remain relevant and not simply irreverent.

To aspiring artists, cracking the million sales mark for an album may seem like a dream come true, but what about achieving one million downloads? Many indie bands are taking that route to get their music heard, and the strategy worked marvelously for Sick of Sarah. The girls just reached the million download milestone, and in the process set a record as the all-time most-seeded Torrent.

It was simply a matter of cost-benefit, according to bassist Jamie Holm. She says the decision to partner with BitTorrent will help the band attract new fans to their concerts where merchandise sales can be significant. The decision has worked out better than Sick of Sarah could have imagined.

Of course, the fact that BitTorrent wrapped the album with downloads of their program helped the seeder numbers. But the music has its own kind of infection with a post-punk, decidedly feminine point of view. The line-up has changed since the group emerged from Minneapolis is 2005, and in 2008 they were named “Best Emerging Artist” at Summerfest in Milwaukee. The BitTorrent release, “2205″ is a bouncy journey through relationships and apparent one-night-stands. Hey, if the boys can sing about it, why not the fair sex?

Some bands rely so heavily on poignant lyricism, it makes you wonder whether poetry or music is its root intent. The art rock musings of The Braids are unmistakably musical at heart, with lyrics seemingly stemming naturally out of melodious background rhythm. Would this album be a success without a single accompanying written word sung aloud? The bet hear is yes, but not to take away from the lyrics themselves, which are both thought-provoking in nature with impressive vocals complementary in sound.Only 7 songs long, Native Speaker‘s songs are a collection of calculated musical marathons rather than sprints, with tracks nearing the 9 minute mark and none shorter than 4 minutes and 25 seconds. Were we to offer a single criticism to The Braids second release, perhaps a minute here and there could be shaved in the spirit of time-saving, while still accomplishing a song’s objective. However, if left to choose between tossing out cookie cutter tracks for the sake of volume alone or Native Speaker as it stands, we would unquestionably opt for the 7 thoroughly developed, albeit longer, songs.Preceded by an EP entitled Set Pieces, self-released in 2008, Native Speaker is The Braids first offering at a full-length album. Comprised of Raphaelle Standell-Preston on lead vocals and guitar, Katie Lee on keyboard and vocals, Austin Tufts on drums and vocals, and Taylor Smith on bass, guitar, samples, percussion and vocals, the group first started working on Native Speaker in July of 2009, but paused to embark on their first major tour, across their native country of Canada. The Braids will look to build upon the initial success of Native Speaker, met with much critical acclaim, already planning tours of both the US and Canada in 2011.

If an Indie spirit, wit and little twang sound like your bag, the Well Hungarians find themselves very musically endowed. Let’s be honest, with a name like “Well Hungarians” you can expect a boatload of confidence and ballsy performance on stage. Though the group does not hail from Eastern Europe as one might mistakenly surmise, their composite Far East St. Louis background, past the point where rap turns to rural, brings a sound straight from the Heartland. A blend of Southern Rock and Midwestern realism, the double edged band brings both lyrics that evoke a grounded sense of truth complete with a tune that brings crowds up out of their seat.Active since 1993, the New Hungarians released their first studio album in 1999, titled Framed. Though what most listeners would consider the bands breakthrough didn’t come until 5 years later in 2004, the Well Hungarians came out with Sorry ‘Bout the Mess, headlined by the title track. “Sorry ‘Bout the Mess,” describes the toll heartbreak can take on not only the mind but one’s surroundings. From spic and span to a dysfunctional pig sty, it typifies the effect one breakup can have across all aspects of life. The “mess” in question refers not only to physical surroundings but a general post-breakup state of affairs, including the questionable decision making that results all too often. An easily relatable song for listeners, the both inviting and apologetic “Sorry ‘Bout the Mess” helped the band to strike chords with new audiences, greatly raising the group’s profile. Just one of four nationally charting singles, it’s joined by “Rock ‘n Roll Singer,” “Betty Rides Around” and 2007 single release “Diamonds and Love” as the group’s most recognizable hits.In 2006, the Well Hungarians were recognized for their efforts and unique musical styling as the New Music Weekly Band of the Year. The Well Hungarians are comprised of Johnny Holzum (vocals, bass guitar), Todd Jones (vocals, lead guitar), Bobby Rolens (vocals, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, fiddle, mandolin), Scott Lesinski (fiddle, keyboards) and Ethan Jones (vocals, acoustic and electric guitar). We are looking forward to Well Hungarians’ next release, whenever that may be, hopefully sooner than later.
